Finalist, WMSO Young Musician Concerto Competition 2023
This dramatic overture to Weber’s romantic opera Oberon depicts the King of the Fairies as he uses his magic powers to help the hero accomplish a seemingly impossible task.
Prokofiev’s spectacular G minor Violin Concerto was written in 1935 and received its première in Madrid. A simple violin melody related to traditional Russian folk music mixes with the vibrant rhythms of Spain in a unique and exciting work.
Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin was first performed in 1879. The highlights performed this evening depicting a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman’s love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.
The opening notes of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 must be one of the best-known introductions, typical of the Classic period with “fate knocking at the door” – and used in popular music adaptations by ELO, Chuck Berry, Judge Judy theme and Saturday Night Fever!
Tickets: £15, £5 (student/child), available from the Box Office
