WEBER  Overture: Der Freischütz
SHOSTAKOVICH  Cello Concerto No 1
BRITTEN  The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
SIBELIUS  Symphony No 5

Cello  Oliver Simpson
Finalist, WMSO Young Musicians' Competition 2019

Welcome to the first concert in our 50th anniversary season! We bring you three contrasting masterpieces from the 20th century and begin the concert with an overture from what is considered the first romantic German opera, Der Freischütz. Shostakovich's cello concerto is one of the most demanding and exciting pieces in the repertoire and we are delighted to welcome Oliver Simpson to play with us, after rather a long lockdown-induced wait since his success in our music competition in 2019. Sibelius' 5th Symphony was partly inspired by the composer seeing a flight of swans flying overhead and he creates a musical picture of this to great effect in the last movement and Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra is a wonderful piece for all ages.

Tickets: £18, £5 (student/child), available from the Box Office
