BRITTEN Soirées Musicales
MAHLER Des Knaben Wunderhorn - selection
WALTON Symphony No 1
Mezzo Soprano Indyana Schneider
Symphony No 1 is the first of two symphonies by English composer William Walton. It features extremes of character from the first movement bursting with electricity to a hauntingly beautiful flute solo in the third movement. Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn) is series of songs composed by this Austro-Bohemian master, at the turn of the last century, based on German folk poems. Britten's buoyant suite of five movements, Soirées Musicales, was inspired by music composed by Rossini in the 1830s. It was first performed in 1937 and the music appeared in a number of film and ballet scores.
