2022 Competitors

YMC Winners

This year's WMSO Young Musicians’ Competition took place on Sunday 9th October 2022, at St. Piran’s Centre, Maidenhead. There were seven competitors aged from 11 to 18, from the local area and from further afield. As in previous years the Competition proved to be a most fascinating musical experience, with an exceptionally high standard of performance. Each entrant played a short recital before an appreciative audience. The panel of three adjudicators consisted of Leon Gee, the conductor of the Windsor and Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra, Robert Roscoe the Conductor Laureate of the Orchestra, and the pianist Nigel Wilkinson.

The first place was awarded to 15-year-old pianist Ryan Wang, who had given a stunning performance of Ravel’s La Valse. Ryan is currently studying on a music scholarship at Eton College and with his piano teacher in France. Joint second place was awarded to two competitors: Jamaal Kashim, harpist age 15, currently studying at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, and Andrea Lam, violinist age 17, currently studying at the Purcell School for Young Musicians.

As a prize, Ryan received a trophy, and will also be invited to play a concerto with the Windsor & Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra.

The Orchestra is most grateful to Handel Pianos Ltd. of Sunningdale who kindly sponsored the event by providing the grand piano and to both the Louis Baylis Trust and the Spoore Merry and Rixman Foundation for their generous sponsorship.

Our next competition will be held on Sunday 15th October 2023.
