RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade
Tabla Alok Verma
Chabrier’s Espana, depicting musical travels around Spain, is a rhapsody for orchestra, developed from a piano duet written in 1883. It was hailed by Gustav Mahler as “the start of modern music”.
Wijeratne’s Tabla Concerto, which features this special form of Indian drum, is a breath of fresh air, embracing an original blend of cultures. Soloist Alok Verma has carved a unique niche for himself in introducing the beautiful world of tabla music to western audiences.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is a well-known symphonic suite composed in 1888 based upon the compilation of Middle Eastern folk tales One Thousand and One Nights, with dazzling and colourful orchestration. One of this composer’s most popular works completes this afternoon’s presentation of exciting music from far-away lands.
Tickets: £15, £5 (student/child), available from the Box Office.
